Questions & Answers

Questions from The League of Women Voters San Diego (LWVSD) and the League of Women Voters of North County San Diego (LWVNCSD) (3)

If elected, how much time and energy will you be able to devote to this volunteer position over the next four years, given your other personal and professional obligations?
Answer from Sheri Sachs:

I have been serving in this elected role since 2016.  Central Committee members are required to attend one monthly Central Committee meeting and one monthly area Caucus meeting.  I have made the majority of these meetings since 2016, and out of respect to the Chair of the Party and our other members, I do my best to stay through completion of these meetings, which can sometimes run 4+ hours.

What is the most significant challenge facing this party in the next decade, and if you are elected, how will you help the party prepare to meet it?
Answer from Sheri Sachs:
Maintaining a unified voice, while respecting and representing the various positions and views of the voting members of the Central Committee and their constituents.  When at Central Committee meetings, I hold deep respect for all members of the Committee, and when viewpoints differ, I do not attack and continue respect during discussion and voting period.
What public figures, past and present, do you believe have given the most postive examples of what this party stands for? Please explain your reasons for thinking so.
Answer from Sheri Sachs:

CA-Rep, Mike Levin (49) maintains high level engagement with his district-utilizing Town Hall meetings and House Parties as outreach methods-keeping members of our community informed and engaged.

Democrats for Peace in the Middle East Statement in Response to Trump Accusing Jewish Americans of “Disloyalty”
Presented at San Diego Democratic Central Committee-August 20, 2019

San Diego, California:  Tonight, Sheri J. Sachs, President and Larry Kornit, Vice-President of Democrats for Peace in the Middle East presented the following statement to the San Diego Democratic Central Committee.

Statement:  President Trump’s statement, “I think Jewish people that vote for a Democrat—I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty”, is an unconscionable attack on the Jewish community and deeply divisive to Americans everywhere. For generations Jews have been accused by fascists and dictators of disloyalty, so it is not surprising that a President who praises the fascists and dictators of the world uses this same language in an attempt to divide our nation.

Democrats for Peace in the Middle East refuses to remain silent when any representative of the United States utilizes the Jewish community as political pawns. We will stand strong and united against hate speech and incitement.  Speaking up against tyranny isn’t ‘disloyal’, it is as American as apple pie.
President Trump’s language is packaged in a way that is recognizable to Jewish Americans as cultural violence which reinforces hostility against the Jewish community from all sides of the political spectrum.  Our shared morals and values will unite us all and propel us to victory in November 2020 when we finally bring an end to this nightmare in our nation’s history.

Democrats for Peace in the Middle East was founded because of the undeniable growth of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in America.  We advocate for peace and recognition of the Israeli and Palestine communities, we fight against anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of bigotry, and we defend religious tolerance and protect human, civil and labor rights.  We ask all of us here tonight to consider our role in the type of society and Democratic Party we want to live and work in today, and gift to future generations.  We are asking us to be mindful of our actions and stand together against all forms of anti-Semitism.

About:  Mission Statement:  Democrats for Peace in the Middle East will work to support durable peace, justice and equality for Israelis and Palestinians, while promoting a platform centered around Israel’s future as a secure and democratic Jewish state, and the Jewish value of "Tikkun Olam"-repair of the world.
